The Post Graduate Course in Technological Innovation in Health: Cytotechnology has the primary objective of providing students with conditions for a professional performance of excellence in the various aspects of cytology. This course arises from the need identified by the European Advisory Committee of Cytotechnology (EACC) and the European Federation of Cytology Societies (EFCS), with regard to the level of knowledge and practical skills required for the performance of cytotechnologists in Europe. From the survey carried out, it was found that training at this level is quite heterogeneous both in terms of the quality and level of training required, and in terms of recognition of the profession. Thus, the need was identified to create advanced/postgraduate training courses capable of providing professionals with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for the performance of the profession in the area of cytomorphology interpretation and cytopathology diagnosis.

This course proposes a year of theoretical and practical training, composed of 3 main areas: Gynecological Cytology, Non-Gynecological Exfoliative Cytology; and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology.

The course aims to:

- acquire in-depth knowledge of cytopathology of the various organs and systems

- microscopically recognize and interpret findings compatible with reparative, reactive, inflammatory, dysplastic and neoplastic processes in cytological samples

- know and apply the most common nomenclature systems at European level in the categorization of cytological samples

- know and apply different methods of molecular biology used for the comprehensive diagnosis in cytopathology

- know and apply ancillary methods such as immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, in situ hybridization and cytogenetics for the diagnosis, prognosis and definition of therapy for various pathologies

- develop skills in digital pathology and computer software, and apply them with the scope of cytopathology

- develop skills in quality assurance and control strategies
