Summary | Cyanobacteria have been extensively explored for the production of compounds with pharmacological interest. Among the biological effects, the inhibition of tumor cell proliferation has been largely explored.

The ecotoxicology laboratory LEGE at CIIMAR possesses a collection of marine strains isolated from the Portuguese coast. With this project we aim to assess the potential of cyanobacteria as producers of compounds with anticancer properties. It is also our objective to evaluate the mechanisms that potentially leads to the inhibition of proliferative cell growth. In this case, we aim to test cyanobacteria for the induction of apoptosis. Taking into account that the potential utility of the cyanobacteria extracts as anticancer drugs depends on the degree of selective toxicity on tumor cells sparing normal cells, it is also our objective to study the cytotoxic effects of cyanobacteria strains on normal human cells. With this study we expect to identify promising marine cyanobacteria strains in terms of anticancer properties, from which new compounds could be isolated.
